Soap, deodorant and sanitiser recalls over sepsis concerns - full list revealed

DermaRite Industries has expanded a recall initiated on July 16 - (Shutterstock / Syda Productions)

A hand soap recall that was first issued in July is being extended to include hand sanitiser, deodorant, shampoo, and other goods by DermaRite Industries, a company that provides medical hygiene supplies to hospitals and similar establishments.

The company has discovered that the items may be tainted with Burkholderia cepacia, a group of bacteria that can cause infection, and is expanding out of extreme caution with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) assistance.

Here are the full list of recalled items and everything else you need to know.

The complete list of recalled goods, which includes the initial four impacted brands, is shown above. Some of these goods are mentioned in DermaRite's website's revised recall data but are not mentioned in the FDA's announcement.

What is Burkholderia cepacia?

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Burkholderia cepacia is a group of mixed bacteria that is frequently found in soil and water, and some species are likely to cause infection.

The CDC adds that infections can range in severity from no symptoms to severe respiratory infections, which are particularly dangerous for immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with cystic fibrosis or other chronic lung diseases. Fever and exhaustion are additional symptoms.

According to the recall, using a impacted product on healthy people who have small skin blemishes could cause a local infection.

The aforementioned susceptible groups, however, may contract an infection that has a higher propensity to enter the bloodstream and cause sepsis, a potentially fatal medical condition.

For healthy individuals, Burkholderia cepcia presents minimal medical danger, according to the CDC. Additionally, it is resistant to antibiotics, making treatment challenging.

According to DermaRite, it has informed its distributors to promptly inspect their stock and dispose of any impacted items in compliance with local regulations.

Customers who have already bought this product can return it for a complete refund at the store where they bought it. Any questions or concerns about the recall can be emailed to Sedgwick at dermarite5186@sedgwick.com.
