Snow way! Met Office reveals truth behind 20cm of snow forecast for next week

Whilst snow can be a lot of fun for kids, it can also cause chaos.

From school closures, to traffic accidents and public transport mayhem - snow brings with it a lot of trouble.

So, when a report suggested heavy snow up to 20cm deep could hit the UK, people were obviously alarmed.

Come next Monday and Tuesday; Scotland, Wales and England could be set to see wintry showers.

And the  Daily Star says there could be snow as far south as Manchester, Liverpool, Stoke and Birmingham.

The national newspaper says there could be 55cm of snow in the Scottish Highlands and 20cm in parts of England - mainly around Yorkshire, reports Wales Online.

But the Met Office says if anything next week looks set to be milder - adding that 'colder interludes' could increase the chance of snow.

And it has warned people that before any colder weather next week, there are likely to be severe weather warnings this weekend.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Harris, said: “Although still a long way off in forecast terms, there are relatively strong signals for very unsettled weather arriving this weekend, and probably continuing well into next week.

"Along with a spell of heavy rain, widespread gales are likely, and severe gales are possible in more exposed parts of the west and north of the UK. There is potential for National Severe Weather Warnings to be issued, so we are advising people to keep a close eye on the latest forecast and updates from the Met Office.”

The long-range forecast for next week from the Met Office reads: "Unsettled conditions are expected to dominate. Although there will be spells of rain and strong winds at times, these will be interspersed with brighter but showery interludes.

"The heaviest rain or stronger winds are expected in the west and northwest with the best of drier and brighter conditions in the south and southeast.

"Any colder interludes carry the risk of frost or wintry showers on high ground in the north, however these are expected to be short-lived."

A spokesman for the Met Office added: "With wind direction through this weekend and next week generally from the west or south-west, this means temperatures will on the mild side and any snow will be confined to high ground.

"It does look like there is a chance of some brief colder interludes for parts of the UK next week, increasing the chance of snow at times.  However it is tricky to put any further detail on the weather for next week at this stage."

According to the Daily Star MetCheck’s forecast for this month predicts a snow risk for England thanks to northerly winds and NetWeather’s snow risk map shows the entire country could see snow next week, with the biggest risk covering the north.
