Snow could fall in higher parts of the North East as Met Office issues ice warning

Parts of the North East will wake up to ice again on Monday morning.

Temperatures will plummet overnight to as cold as -1°C and there is even a risk of snow in higher parts of the region.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning which will be in place from 3am until 10.30am and affects County Durham , Northumberland and Gateshead.

A spokesperson said: "Areas of rain and hill snow seem likely to affect many areas for a time tonight, probably clearing by morning and allowing temperatures to dip more widely below zero.

"Icy stretches may be encountered, especially on untreated surfaces, while the odd high level road may see a further 1-2 cm of snow."

The alert warns that there could be difficult travel conditions with some disruption possible on roads and railways, and that icy surfaces could make accidents and falls more likely.

What to expect

  • Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Icy surfaces may make injuries or accidents more likely.
