Snow and ice warning as North East sees freezing temperatures

The North East woke up to freezing weather this morning as the region faced a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

The winter weather was set to move south from Scotland and Northern Ireland on Sunday evening and expected to hit parts of Northern England come Monday morning.

The warning is in place this morning. The Met Office warned drivers and those commuting to expect travel disruptions overnight.

Commuters and pedestrians have been urged to take care when heading out due to the icy surfaces.

The region has been hit with a number of weather warnings throughout the Christmas period as Storm Bella hit the North East.

Snow appeared overnight in the region on Christmas Eve morning while on Boxing Day, the North East was issued a yellow weather warning of heavy rain and strong winds.

The cold weather is set to continue as the temperatures drop below zero to -2° in the region.

Here's the weather forecast for the rest of today: "Cold and generally dry and bright, but early icy patches will be slow to thaw.

"Showers pushing onto coasts later, with a risk of hail and thunder, maybe turning wintry inland.

"A maximum temperature of 3 °C."
