In the country: Cumbria. This three-bedroom former station master’s house near Penrith has large gardens, period graces throughout, and the remains of the station platform. For £340,000 it is a pity the trains on the Settle-Carlisle line thunder close by.

Wreck of the week: London. This £300,000 two-bedroom mid-terrace in Catford is in need of a complete overhaul as its condition is as though time stood still – circa 1975. It would take £30,000-plus to drag it into the 21st century. It is handily situated close to three stations and a park, although the kitchen and garden are tiny.

Bargain of the week: Staffordshire. Priced at £250,000 for a quick sale, this four-bedroom barn conversion by the A51 in Stableford is chicly turned out with oak floors, two en suites and a designer bathroom. The rooms are large and there is an attached garage. The original hamlet is dwarfed by a large mobile home and caravan park.
