Smoke billows into the sky as firefighters battle allotment blaze in Gateshead

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at an allotment in Gateshead.

Emergency services were called to the fire located on the land off Elysium Lane at about 1pm on Saturday.

Nine crews are currently in attendance and the smoke can be seen from as far away as Newcastle city centre.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire crews are currently dealing with a large fire in the #Teams #Gateshead area. We have 9 appliances and a Command Support Unit in attendance.

"Please ensure you close all window and doors to prevent smoke entering your property and avoid the area if possible."

Officers from Northumbria Police have put a number of road closures in place while the fire is extinguished.

A spokesperson from the force said: "Shortly before 1pm today (Sat) we received a report of an allotment fire on Elysium Lane, Gateshead.

"Officers are currently in attendance assisting Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

"Please avoid the area at this time."

Ambulance crews are also at the scene but no casualties have been reported so far.
