As a service-based company we are dependent on our staff for our efficiency; the quality and speed of their work reflects directly on the business and is therefore of prime importance.
Improving efficiency means keeping staff motivated and happy. We have the usual flexi-hours, work from home, holiday packages etc, but what worked recently was using templates and reusable assets to save time.
As a digital agency specialising in games, we create and build various websites, mobile apps and games. During a recent busy period, we had too much work and not enough staff and started seeing how we could reuse elements of our code, designs and illustrations in different projects in order to achieve deadlines.
This worked so well that it has permeated throughout the company and created its own momentum and a source of pride at having used the same code library or slightly modified creative multiple times on very different projects.
We are also carrying this theme through our administration, simplifying and merging processes to create templates that can be reused for different purposes. Creating best practice documents that are constantly updated with new best practice discoveries.
The idea of reusing work has been gamified; there is a sense of achievement on reusing anything, and a certain amount of pride for having done so multiple times and more so in when in wildly different projects or aspects of work. This recycling leads to a more relaxed atmosphere and better efficiency.
