Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Ed McGinty on verge of signing for League One club

Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Ed McGinty is on the verge of joining Oxford United.

A deal has been agreed with the League One club and McGinty was left out of the Bit O’Red squad for their 2-0 home defeat to UCD tonight.

Mirror Sport revealed last month that Hearts and Dundee United were chasing the former Ireland Under-21 international.

But Oxford have swooped late to win the race for his signature, with confirmation of the move expected during the week.

Sligo Rovers will only pocket a five-figure fee for their No 1 goalkeeper who could yet make his final appearance in Thursday's Europa Conference League clash against Motherwell.

McGinty was Rovers’ penalty shootout hero against Bala Town in Thursday’s nervy first round win at the Showgrounds.

Discussions are ongoing between the Bit O’Red and Oxford as to whether he can play a part in Thursday’s clash away to the SPL side, but he has played his last league game for John Russell's men.

There had also been some interest in highly-rated McGinty from an unnamed Championship club.
