Sky Pool launch: swimmer tests transparent pool suspended between two apartment blocks ahead of opening in May

A lone swimmer tests out the world’s first transparent Sky Pool ahead of its official launch next month.

The 25-metre-long pool links two apartment blocks at the Embassy Gardens development at Nine Elms and will allow swimmers to float 35 metres in the air while taking in sweeping views across the capital, including the nearby US Embassy building.

It is the brainchild of property developer Sean Mulryan, who said his vision “stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering.”

The acrylic aquarium style pool was made in Colorado and transported 5,000 miles to its final destination at the £1 billion development near the Thames built by EcoWorld Ballymore.

Apartments at Embassy Gardens, the £1bn development at Nine Elms, cost from £897,500

It will be free to use for residents of the scheme where flats start from £897,500.

The team that installed the eye catching feature included architects Arup Associates, engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds.

The water alone weighs 375 tonnes.

Swimmers will enjoy views of London landmarks, including the nearby US Embassy building

The official opening hosted by radio and TV personality and Capital FM DJ Roman Kemp and featuring synchronised swimming team Aquabatix, takes place on May 19.

It was originally set to open last summer but the launch was held up by the pandemic.

Mr Mulryan, chairman of Ballymore added: “The experience of the pool will be truly unique, it will feel like floating through the air in central London.”
