A skeleton has been found on the outskirts of Port Lincoln in South Australia.
Police have contacted Jarred Mueller's father Peter to let him know about the possible discovery of his son's body, the ABC has confirmed.
Jarred has not been seen since leaving his father's house on Proper Bay Road in Port Lincoln on June 12, 1999.
Two men discovered human remains in scrubland near Western Approach Road, and reported it to police on Wednesday.
Police initially inquired into the circumstances of the death, however the matter is now not considered suspicious.
The skeleton was found near Jarred Mueller's father's house, on the outskirts of the Eyre Peninsula fishing town.
The officer in charge of the Eyre and Western Local Service Area, Superintendent Paul Bahr, said it would be some time before the identity of the remains could be officially confirmed.
"Forensic response have attended the area yesterday and a report will be prepared for the coroner," he said.
He said the missing man's family had been advised of the discovery.
Mr Mueller was 28 when he left his father's property on foot.
At the time, police and State Emergency Service volunteers searched nearby bushland for him without success.
