Skegness like 'Piccadilly Circus' as holidaymakers avoid warnings

Beaches in Skegness were packed with punters as people ignored the Government's advice to remain indoors.

Holidaymakers flocked to the seaside town on Saturday, March 21, only days after Boris Johnson warned people to stay away from others.

The NHS also put out a plea calling for the public to avoid gatherings as the death toll from coronavirus mounts.

Cafes and arcades were open to punters less than 24 hours after the government ordered venues in the UK to close down, Lincolnshire Live reports.

"It's like Piccadilly Circus here," one worried local said.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire Marc Jones said: "Time for everyone to be socially responsible or be made to be.

"These caravan sites and arcades must be closed and quickly.

"Lincolnshire’s health and 999 services cannot and should not be facing hundreds of thousands visitors on top of residents to support. I will be raising urgently."

District councillor Jimmy Brookes was disappointed to see the coast heaving.

He said: "This is madness Skegness is packed, cafes and arcades are open.

"Totally irresponsible. You might not get it bad, but you may pass it on to someones, dad, mum, grandad, grandma or children which might be fatal.

"You are also putting our NHS at risk. Social distancing?"

MP Matt Warman added: "It’s an immense privilege to represent an area that is hugely popular with tourists.

"Right now, however, it is categorically wrong for people to come to Skegness and surrounding areas - for the sake of yourself, your friends and family and our NHS, social distancing is the only responsible course of action.

"Please act responsibly if you are a business or an individual, and bear in mind that legislation is coming very soon to enforce this important action."

One person said: "Best part of the population will be wiped out. Sad as it is.

"Family have to come first and it's not just individuals at risk we all are and putting others at risk by going out."

Another person added: "Couldn't agree more. We closed our business last night.

"I cannot believe what I am reading on here today, still... what will it take for people to grasp this. We need lock down as soon as possible."

The Lincolnshire coast wasn't the only tourism hot spot across the UK overrun with visitors.

Beaches in Brighton, Cornwall, Devon, East Yorkshire and West Sussex all saw large footfall throughout Saturday.
