Sixth Commandment killer Ben Field has murder conviction quashed

  • Benjamin Field's murder conviction for the death of university lecturer Peter Farquhar – a case made famous by the BBC TV series The Sixth Commandment – has been quashed by the Court of Appeal.
  • Field was jailed for life in 2019 after being found guilty of murdering Mr Farquhar, whose death in 2015 was attributed to acute alcohol toxicity.
  • He admitted to deceiving Mr Farquhar into a fake relationship to inherit his fortune but denied killing him.
  • The Court of Appeal ruled that the jury at the original trial had not been properly directed, leading to a 'defective' verdict.
  • A retrial has been ordered, and Field will remain in prison while the Crown Prosecution Service considers an appeal to the Supreme Court.
