Six rescued from Loch Lomond campsite after extreme weather chaos leads to tents being submerged

Two children and four adults have been rescued from a campsite in Loch Lomond after a spell of extreme weather led to them getting into difficulty in the early hours of this morning.

The alarm was raised shortly before 1am when Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team received reports of multiple incidents on the north side of the Loch following torrential rain and thunderstorms.

Photos taken at the scene show two tents completely submerged in what appears to be deep water. Blue-lit rescue boats can be seen on stand-by while workers in high vis jackets gather near the Loch.

It is understood that the elements had wreaked havoc for those camping at various sites near the River Falloch, and that help was required from the team as well as crews from Helensburgh and Inveraray to save them from harm.

Loch Lomond Rescue Boat was deployed and the group, who had been camping near Ardleish, a spot located at the very northern end of Loch Lomond, were taken to awaiting Coastguard for treatment.

Emergency services including two senior officers, Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also rushed to the aid of the youngsters. It is unclear whether anyone was injured or hospitalised as a result of the incident.

The dramatic event comes after a yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office for thunderstorms last night. The warning remains in place today for most of the central belt.
