Six people in three days test positive for coronavirus after travelling to Ireland

Six people in the space of three days tested positive for Covid-19 after they travelled to Ireland.

The recent rise brings the number of travel related coronavirus cases in Ireland to 601.

This is according to the latest data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre recorded as of midnight on Tuesday.

And this figure is sure to rise sharply again, as it was announced that 15 of the 23 new infections recorded on Thursday were "directly or indirectly related to travel".

Speaking on Friday morning, the chair of the National Public Health Emergency Team Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group said cases linked to travel are "problematic".

Prof Philip Nolan, Chair of NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group (Collins)

Professor Philip Nolan said: "NPHET recommended a escalation of a set of measures to ensure that we close down on that, our current tracking and tracing method has tracked down those cases and isolated them at an early stage.

"We're also beginning to see people being more sociable, perhaps people being forgetful about the risks of viral transmission and we're seeing clusters of cases emerging in very small numbers of circumstances.

"But those circumstances we advise against, gatherings of large numbers of people, particularly indoors, are the ideal opportunity for this virus to spread."

Since the pandemic began, five people have died in Ireland after contracting the coronavirus abroad.

Speaking on Thursday, Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said all non-essential travel should be avoided.

He said: "15 of today's confirmed cases are directly or indirectly related to travel.

"NPHET today reiterates that all non-essential travel overseas should be avoided.

"In addition, 77% of cases reported today are under 25 years of age. Covid-19 is extremely infectious and none of us are immune."
