Six people die with COVID-19 in Bristol hospitals in one day

Six people lost their lives to coronavirus in one day at Bristol's hospitals.

On April 21, three people died at both the University Hospitals Bristol Trust, which runs Bristol Royal Infirmary, and North Bristol NHS Trust which runs Southmead Hospital, after contracting the virus.

On previous days this week, between two to three deaths were reported.

This has brought the overall number at both Bristol hospitals to 129, with 65 at UHB and 64 at North Bristol Trust.

Figures released today (Thursday, April 23) also show Bristol now has 519 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The results come on the same day a major expansion of those who will be tested was announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

It's hoped all 'essential workers” in England and their families – based on criteria similar to those used for deciding who can still attend school – will be tested.

Mr Hancock said: “From today, employers of essential workers will be able to go on gov.uk to get a test for any of their staff.

“From tomorrow, any essential workers who need a test will be able to book an appointment on gov.uk themselves, directly.

“This all applies for people in essential workers’ households too who need a test.

“It’s all part of getting Britain back on her feet.”
