Six-car crash on M9 sparks mile-long tailbacks in rush hour traffic

A six-car pile-up on a major Scottish motorway led to tailbacks more than a mile-long on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the M9 southbound at Junction 9 near Bannockburn, Stirling shortly after 9.15am on January 16 following reports of the multi-vehicle collision. Road network monitors Traffic Scotland have suggested that glare from the low winter sun may be causing visibility issues for drivers on the road.

Traffic information from Google suggests tailbacks more than a mile and a quarter long on the southbound carriageway, close to the Stirling service station on the vital central belt route. The road was "partially blocked" until around 10.45am; it is not known whether there are any injuries.

Traffic Scotland said on Twitter: "Reports of a six vehicle collision on the #M9 Southbound just prior to J9. Traffic is looking slow, Police are currently en-route."

They later added: "The #M9 southbound remains partially blocked due a multi vehicle collision. Emergency services are at the scene!

"Traffic remains slow in the area. Low sun glare is also affecting the route."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a crash involving six vehicles on the M9 southbound near Stirling Services shortly after 9.15am on Monday, 16 January. Recovery has been arranged for the vehicles.”

Further along the motorway, emergency services were also called to another crash at Junction 1A, the Kirkliston Interchange outside Edinburgh, shortly after 9am. That incident has now been cleared.
