SIT to probe Ramajeyam murder case

CHENNAI: Citing CBI’s admission that it was unable to crack the brutal murder of K N Ramajeyam, brother of DMK minister KN Nehru, Madras high court has formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the decade-old case.

Justice V Bharathidasan, pointing out that the country’s premier investigation agency – CBI -- admitted that it could not zero in on any motive behind the murder despite its best possible efforts, said: “This court is of the firm view that constituting a SIT with dedicated and efficient officers to conduct further investigation in the matter alone would bring the case to its logical conclusion at the earliest.”

He then directed the Tamil Nadu government to depute Jayakumar, Tuticorin district superintendent of police, Madhan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ariyalur, and R Ravi, Deputy Superintendent of Police, SCB, CBI, Chennai, to the SIT. “The state government is directed to provide all necessary infrastructure, accommodation, transport facilities, and manpower for the SIT, besides budgetary support as required by the SIT to enable them to conduct the investigation effectively,” the court added.

“The SIT shall commence the investigation as early as possible preferably before February 21. The SIT is further directed to file a status report on the investigation once in every fortnight before this court and first of such report shall be filed on or before March 7 and this court will monitor the investigation being conducted by the SIT,” Justice Bharathidasan said.

On March 29, 2012 Ramajayam went missing and subsequently his body was found strapped with cello tape and hands and legs tied with strings on the bank of Cauvery River at Kallanai Road in Trichy. Since the CB-CID failed to show any progress in the investigation the probe was transferred to CBI on November 7, 2017.
