Sir Kenny Dalglish has urged the people of Liverpool to put politics aside and continue to embrace the mass covid-19 testing operation taking place in the city.
The Reds Legend, who was diagnosed with the virus back in the Spring, said Liverpool could be a pioneer in fighting back against pandemic.
He was speaking to the city's Director of Public Health Matt Ashton about the city's mass testing pilot.
Thousands of people have come forward to get tested at the growing number of new facilities around the city after Liverpool was chosen buy government to be the first area of the country for a mass testing pilot.
There are are already 17 new testing centres being operated by the armed forces around the city, where people are able to get quick turnaround covid-19 tests.
Speaking about the project, Sir Kenny said: "Its unprecedented really, there's a lot of people getting a bit edgy, a bit fidgety because the lockdown has happened two or three times.
"But the restrictions and everything else isn't done for any other reason than to try and help everybody.
"The fact that Liverpool has been chosen as a test centre for the whole population, free tests, pop along, get examined - I think that's a great testament to the people of Liverpool, because the government realise they'll throw their whole heart into it and try and be as co-operative as they possibly can.
"So pop along, get a test, honestly it's not sore - I've had one, and at least you know where you are and you know it's not doing you any damage or to anyone else.
"Let's support what they are trying to do and support the whole population.
"The more you get, the happier we will be and the more successful the campaign will be."
As a city, Liverpool has a healthy suspicion of Conservative governments, but the Liverpool legend said this is a time to put politics aside and focus on the health of the city.
He said: "This isn't political, this is health - it doesn't matter who saves your life is there is something wrong with you or who cures you if you are ill.
"It's about yourself, this is for your benefit and it might help other people.
"Everyone wants to get back to normal, it might take a bit of time, but I'm sure with this project here, we can help a great deal to get greater information about how the virus has spread and maybe help the people of Liverpool also.
"Try your best to support it, you never know what might come at the end of it.
"The council in Liverpool might be different from the government, but that's not the point, and I think it's commendable for everybody that they've put this in a Labour area, and they know how strongly fervent the Liverpool people are and I think they've made a good choice, this is for everybody's benefit."
Urging everyone to get tested, whether they think they may have the virus or not, Sir Kenny added: "Sometimes you might get to a stage where you go 'well I don't need it because I've not got it', well you are better off finding out, if it's only a walk up the road.
"You cannot be afraid because it's not the kind of thing that is going to hurt you, you just pop along, get it done and get your answer - it is better to know than not to know."
"Let's go and do Liverpool a huge favour and put it in the hearts of all the people, where it should be and where it almost always is."
"They are great at championing their causes and it would be great if Liverpool could be the pioneers at setting the coronavirus out the door and away back to where it came from."
The latest testing centre was launched at Anfield Stadium today, taking the number to 17 around the city.
Mr Ashton confirmed that the eventual aim is to add dozens more centres in the city by the end of the pilot programme.
