Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly Manchester United's No1 choice to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And the Argentine, who remains under contract until June 2023, has a long-term admirer in Red Devils legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
According to the Daily Star, United will try and lure Pochettino to Old Trafford if they decide to part company with Solskjaer.
The Norwegian's team were humiliated 5-0 by Liverpool on Sunday and have picked up just one point from their last four Premier League games.
It's believed the United board are reluctant to make a rash decision and will stick with Solskjaer until, at least, the international break in November.

That time will allow the Red Devils to consider Pochettino, who may be reluctant to leave PSG and Lionel Messi behind after less than 12 months in the job.
The capital club boast one of the best squads in Europe and are one of the favourites to win this season's Champions League.
United and Ferguson are said to be huge fans of the former Tottenham boss, who achieved considerable success during his time in North London.
Pochettino guided Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019 and twice challenged for the Premier League title with limited resources.
His achievements in England led to praise from Ferguson, who first spoke about Pochettino after his Southampton team narrowly lost to United in January 2013.
Fergie told the press: "For the first 30 minutes I thought we were fantastic, we played really well. But in the second half Southampton have been the best team to play here this season.
"We were fortunate to win the game. They pushed on top of us and didn't give us any time on the ball."
Pochettino went on to be snapped up by Spurs in July 2014 and six months later, Tottenham MP David Lammy revealed a conversation he had with Fergie.
The politician said: "About six weeks ago, I sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson at a dinner in support of grassroots football abroad.

"He said to me, 'I think you guys have got the best manager in the Premier League.' Alex Ferguson said that."
Ferguson was reportedly not impressed with the decision to appoint Solskjaer ahead of Pochettino and visited PSG's team hotel before their Champions League clash with Manchester City in May.
The Red Devils legend also publicly praised Pochettino in April 2016, telling reporters: "Well the manager has been fantastic.
"They [Spurs] have a bad record of managers, there is no doubt about that.
Should Manchester United sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? Have your say!
"They have had so many over the years, but this lad has composure. You never see him ruffled and the way his team play is a testimony to the work he is doing.
"The most important thing for English football is how many English and young players are in his team.
"He understands the advantage of playing young people. They won't let you down and they have been fantastic."
