Sir Alex Ferguson in Rangers return as Manchester United icon runs rule over Cody Gakpo

Sir Alex Ferguson was snapped at Ibrox alongside John Greig on Tuesday night as Rangers went toe to toe with PSV.

Gio van Bronckhorst face the Dutch cracks with a spot in the Champions League group stage at stake and you don't have to look far for a sub-plot. It's Van Bronckhorst vs Van Nistelrooy, the two legendary Dutchmen who were former teammates for the Netherlands and also went toe to toe at this stadium 23 years ago when Gers ran riot with a famous 4-1 win.

There's also the ongoing saga surrounding PSV sensation Cody Gakpo, who is in the cross hairs of Manchester United after starting the season with three goals and three assists, and is rated at £35million. The Old Trafford side are hopeful of getting a deal done before the transfer deadline in two weeks with new boss Erik Ten Hag a big fan.

Ferguson, a former Rangers player himself, was caught by TV cameras in the stands shortly before kick-off in the first leg. He took on a more clearly defined advisory role alongside David Gill, Bryan Robson and John Murtough in the summer and has been helping keep CEO Richard Arnold right on the football side of things.

And it's likely he had a keen eye on Gakpo, as his team continue to chase a deal for the 23-year-old. Ferguson was seen in conversation with Rangers legend Greig as he returned to his hometown of Govan to watch Gers, and Gakpo, in action.
