Singer Brian Kennedy tells of joy as he finishes five-month long chemotherapy treatment

Brian Kennedy said he is "lucky and grateful" to be alive, as he finished his five month long chemotherapy treatment.

The 52-year-old, who was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2016, has thanked the incredible staff at St James's Hospital.

And the Belfast-born singer is now looking forward to getting back to gigging and singing.

He posted online: "Hard to believe that today is my last chemo session after five months.

"Weirdly I started on New Year’s Eve 2018 and here I sit in June 2019 for the final one.

"I wear the little pump until Weds then I’m done done. The team here at St James's are incredible.

"So cheery no matter what. Thanks everybody. I can’t help thinking of the people in my life who didn’t make it over the last three years since my original diagnosis and feel so lucky and grateful that I get to be here.

"Singing and gigging mean more to me than ever. Here’s to the next one! #MusicIsMedicine."

Fans rushed to the comments to praise the 2006 Irish Eurovision entry, and the hospital, after the Instagram post.

One said: "Congrats and well done Brian. I had my surgery and treatment in St James.

"What a fantastic hospital and team they are. Stay strong and mind yourself in the days, weeks and months ahead."

A second said: "Great news! Music really is medicine; especially when you make it like you do mate!"

A third said: "So glad to hear this positive news for you."

Another added: "Good man Brian. Best news I've heard in a while. Onwards and upwards."
