Simon Pegg blames 'very serious' undiagnosed condition for his multiple car crashes and driving bans

Simon Pegg has claimed his undiagnosed ADHD was to blame for his multiple road accidents and driving bans.

The Mission Impossible star, 55, has had three driving bans, several car incidents and crashed “every hire car on holiday”.

Pegg said he is a “good driver” but “loses focus” if there are lots of people talking in the car.

The Hot Fuzz star revealed a recent crash in Greece with his wife Maureen and daughter Matilda, 16, in the car encouraged him to finally get tested for ADHD.

Pegg said he has realised as he has gotten older that “I probably have very serious ADHD and I need to look into that”.

During an appearance on Jameela Jamil’s Wrong Turns podcast, he recounted his latest hired car crash when asked to talk about a “humiliating” moment in his life.

“My main one is that I, seemingly without exception, crash every hire car on holiday,” the Shaun of the Dead actor admitted.

“I did it the other day in Greece - I was backing out of the driveway of where we were staying, I had like five people in the car, everyone was talking.

“I didn't look, I was checking the sides of the car to make sure I was clear of the driveway, I didn't look at rear view camera thing and I hit a post.

“And it's become, like, I can feel my wife just crumbling with disappointment.”

He went on: “I've been banned from driving three times. Well, because of totting, you know, like, your points mount up.

“So you get done for speeding - most recently it happened because, I'm justifying it, it's unjustifiable, there are so many 20 zones where there used to be 30 and you go into them, you know, like you always would and the cameras are there very quickly.

“Anyway, that's not an excuse.”

“But on the day [in Greece], I was in such a bad mood all day after I did it as well because I just felt my wife's disappointment in me,” he confessed.

“My daughter, bless her heart, was like, ‘Are you all right, dad?’”

The World’s End star said the incident prompted him to Google, “Do people with ADHD get into more car accidents than people who don't have it?” to which the answer was yes.

“And it's because of a lack of focus and ability to kind of totally focus,” he explained.

“And that was the final straw that broke my ADHD camel's back. I need to speak to a psychiatrist and find out for sure if I have this thing.”

Pegg insisted he is competent behind the wheel and has done a lot of “advanced driving training” but struggles to concentrate when there are other passengers in the car.

He previously admitted police officers have sometimes let him off speeding offences because they were fans of his cult police film, Hot Fuzz.

The British star was hit with a six-month driving ban in 2021 after his £66,000 Mercedes was caught doing 63mph in a 40mph A-road.

A year earlier, he received a £660 fine for going at 63mph along the A41 in Hendon, London.
