Simon Jordan warns Newcastle need a 'relegation specialist' after Unai Emery snub

Simon Jordan has warned Newcastle's new owners they need a "relegation specialist" after Unai Emery's Magpies rejection.

The Villareal boss released a statement confirming he'd stay with the La Liga outfit, despite admitting he'd held informal talks with the Magpies.

Emery has thanked the Puig family - who currently own Villareal - for their support and will continue to give the project his all.

The Magpies fanbase are growing increasingly concerned over the time it's taking to appoint a new manager, with the club second bottom of the Premier League and six points adrift of safety.

Emery emerged as the favourite to take over at St. James' Park earlier this week, but talkSPORT pundit Jordan believes Newcastle should be looking at a manager with proven credentials.

He told talkSPORT: "I thought Emery was given an unbelievably hard time at Arsenal. I think the media piled [in] and took away from some of the things he was achieving on the pitch,” Jordan told talkSPORT.

“It was an unbelievably difficult job to follow Arsene Wenger and I think he’s proven himself to be a very formidable manager.

“Emery has won tournaments. I think he’s a decent manager – but I do not think he’s a fit for Newcastle United.

“Who wants to take this job knowing they’re a makeweight in a bigger picture?

“The challenge for Newcastle is that, with this embarrassment of riches, they’re gonna be victims of their own success.

“Everybody knows this is going to be a project for someone to take over and build even bigger. You want someone to deal with the here and now – and the here and now is a relegation battle.

“If they turn the year on less than 14 points, they’re gonna get relegated. They need somebody who’s a relegation specialist.”
