Simi Valley wildfire stops growing as full containment nears

Nov. 12--Firefighters in Ventura County were expected to have a wildfire in Simi Valley fully contained by Thursday morning, officials said.

The Banister fire ignited about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday near Banister Way and Wood Ranch Parkway, near the city's border with Thousand Oaks. Encouraged by dry, steady winds, the blaze quickly burned through 40 acres before crews were able to limit the spread.

More than 100 firefighters were at the scene and had it 50% contained late Wednesday. The fire's containment was likely to increase after a morning review of its perimeter, Ventura County Fire Capt. Scott Dettorre told The Times on Thursday.

"We hope to have this fully contained by 10 a.m.," he said.

The blaze was initially burning in grass along a ridge that was not reachable for certain fire engines, officials said.

Winds between 5 and 10 mph pushed the flames through light grass across a road, less than half a mile from a cluster of suburban neighborhoods.

No structures were threatened, and no evacuation orders have been issued.

Times staff writer Matt Hamilton contributed to this report.
