Signs of heatstroke in dogs to look out for – and how to keep them cool

The UK is about to bask in a week-long heatwave, which means it's time to ensure we all stay cool and hydrated.

But this isn't just important for us humans – it's also crucial for our household pets.

It’s important to keep our dogs cool during the hot weather especially during a heatwave, when the risk of heatstrokes is larger.

From big dogs to small dogs – they can all suffer in the heat.

Dogs can suffer from heatstroke similar to how humans can, so we want to keep our bundles of joy as healthy and happy as possible.

We’ve put together the best ways to ensure your dog keeps cool this summer and the best things we can do to help them.

How to keep dogs cool during a heatwave

Here are some of the ways you can make sure your dog is cool:

• Place damp towels down for them to lie on
  
• Walk them in the early morning or evening when it is cooler
  
• Don’t take them on long walks in hot weather
  
• Make sure they have shaded areas outside to lie in and encourage them to stay in these areas
  
• Put a garden sprinkler on
  
• Purchase a paddling pool for them to enjoy and keep it in a shaded area
  
• Never leave your dog in the car
  
• Always carry water for your dog with you if you’re going out

• Create games that don’t involve much running during hot days, such as hiding toys or treats to find. Or using toys to encourage them into a shaded area or paddling pool.
  
• Freeze foods they can enjoy such as half a frozen banana
  
• Give them an ice cube to crunch on
  
• Ensure their water bowl is always full
  
• Brush your dog so they are free of any knots
  
• Keep your dog away from hot surfaces on their feet - if it's hot for you, it will be hot for them
  
• Take them somewhere they can go for a swim either in a lake or in the sea
  

Symptoms of heatstroke to look out for

Dogs can develop heatstroke and here are some symptoms to look out for:

• Heavy panting
  
• Rapid pulse
  
• Lack of coordination
  
• Glazed eyes
  
• Excessive salivation
  
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
  
• Unconsciousness
  

If you’re worried your dog is suffering from heatstroke you should take them to a cool and shaded area, apply cold, wet towels to their body, head and neck.

Give them some water to drink or to lick an ice cube, you want to avoid giving them too much water at once as they could go into shock.

These actions need to be done quickly as heatstroke can be fatal. During or after you have followed these steps call your vet and tell them what’s happened and explain your dogs' symptoms.
