Sidhu Moosewala’s anthem glorifies VIP culture

CHANDIGARH: If you are Shubhdeep Singh ‘Sidhu Moosewala’, reaching out to youth is unlikely to be a problem, given that the singer-turned-politician has 1.03 crore followers on YouTube.

Congress’s Mansa assembly seat candidate, Moosewala released his own anthem, ‘Youngest In Charge’, for the February 20 assembly elections in Punjab on Sunday. Within 24 hours, the song had clocked 21.4 lakh views and got a good response from his fans too.

However, the song also ended up briefly glorifying VIP culture in the state. Sample this line from the song: ‘Kaali Range (Rover) utte batti laal, balliye (a red beacon light will adorn the top of the black Range Rover)’. The song, like most songs by Moosewala, also has generous mentions of ‘Jat’, a caste which is a staple for most mainstream Punjabi lyricists.

At the same time, it also takes a dig at politicians involved in corrupt practices. The song has a verse with lyrics: ‘Ho lokan deyan dilan vich vasse gabru, hor’an wangu bas kalle note’an vich ni (this young man lives in the heart of people and not just in money).’

The song features Sunny Malton. The video has Moosewala dressed in a white kurta pyjama, while a car behind Malton in the video has a red beacon. This is the second politically charged song he has released in the past one year. Seven months ago, Moosewala had released a song ‘295’, in what was seen as a reply to accusation of hurting religious sentiments levelled over another song, ‘Jatti Jatt Jeona Morh Di Bandook Vargi’.
