‘Sick and vulgar’ Tube passenger who sexually assaulted young woman on Central line is jailed

A “vulgar and sickening individual” who sexually assaulted a terrified young woman on a London Underground train has been jailed.

Rohan Uddin, 22, sat next to the victim in her 20s and touched her before masturbating in a “horrific incident”.

She had been travelling on her own in a relatively empty Tube carriage as the eastbound Central line service reached Marble Arch station just after 9pm on April 29.

The woman, scared for her own safety, moved away from Uddin but was able to get an mobile phone image of him.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard the snap enabled British Transport Police to identify Uddin and place a marker on his name.

The Metropolitan Police arrested him for an unrelated matter in June and discovered he was wanted.

Uddin, of Bedford Road, Tottenham, then assaulted two police constables.

He was sentenced to a total of 16 months and ordered to pay £187 surcharge.

Uddin also received a 10-year sexual harm prevention order which prohibits him from talking to or engaging with any women or girls not known to him when travelling on public transport, entering a station or travelling on transport while under the influence of any intoxicating liquor or substance, placing his hands inside clothing in order to touch his genitals while on board a train and from travelling without a valid ticket.

Detective Constable Elaine Sexton-Thomas said: “It is thanks to the brave woman reporting this horrific incident to staff and to officers that we have been able to get this vulgar and sickening individual off of the railway network.

“The sentence handed down and the long-lasting sexual harm prevention order should act as a warning to others that we take all reports of sexual offences and unwanted sexual behaviour seriously and we will always support and believe victims throughout the investigation.”

Anyone who experiences or witnesses a sexual offence on the railway or at a station, can discreetly text BTP on 61016, or call 0800 40 50 40.
