After its premiere date was delayed by a year, Shrek 5 has finally dropped its first teaser trailer, and the fans aren’t too pleased with what’s on the horizon for this beloved franchise.
Back in February 2025, Universal Pictures completely gee’d up Shrek fans after it revealed that the iconic fairytale icons would be returning for a fifth movie.
The announcement revealed that all its OG all-stars — Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy — would be returning, with Zendaya jumping in as Shrek’s teen daughter, Felicia.
While you’d think fans would be frothing at the mouth for another Shrek movie, the cast announcement was completely draaaaaaaged.
Just like the villagers in the first movie, Brogers stormed online with their pitchforks, taking aim at the new animation style.
Alongside its cast announcement, Shrek 5 was originally slated for December 23, 2026, but it was pushed back to June 30, 2027, without any specific reasons. However, some speculated that it was due to fan complaints, and others speculate that it was to avoid competition with Avengers: Doomsday.
Now, Universal Pictures has dropped the movie’s first teaser trailer.
Take a peek below:
Tugging on the nostalgia strings of our hearts, the teaser trailer kicks off with the legendary storybook opening and memorable Shrek tune “Fairytale” before a memorable voice kicks in, teasing a kick-arse Donkey and Shrek adventure.
The teaser features Shrek, Fiona, their sons, Fergus and Farkle, and Donkey on what appears to be an action-packed adventure featuring a horny snowman, a gumdrop booty and gingerbread baddies.
But unfortunately, it appears that the animation has remained the same, and the villagers fans are once again picking up their pitchforks and pointing them at the new animation style.
They didn’t fix the animation pic.twitter.com/HpoV9IpNEu

Why did they stray from the original design.

Shrek 5 shouldn't be different for us who watched it as a kid since Shrek 1 pic.twitter.com/eyy7n9sC6c
Sincerely, it's not about nostalgia or something but the design of Shrek was beautiful, we could even see the freckles on Fiona's faces, we could see the moles on prince charming, we could see every eyelashes and eyebrows so much detailed, I miss the realistic beauty of shrek pic.twitter.com/kcvmqZsP9g

“WE WANT THE OLD SHREK BACK, NOT THIS,” one fan wrote on IG.
“What the heck is this animation?” another wrote.
“Y’all better fix this immediately 😭 this is a mess,” wrote a third.
Back when the teaser first dropped, which was followed by the first wave of the angry mob, Forbes revealed that Shrek 5 is using a new animation engine called MoonRay, which was introduced with Puss In Boots: The Last Wish back in 2022.
Could Shrek 5 get the Sonic the Hedgehog treatment?
In 2019, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie received the same kind of brutal feedback from fans regarding its portrayal of the speedy blue hedgehog. In response, director Jeff Fowler shared a tweet, stating that “the message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes”.
“It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be,” he penned.
Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast 🔧✌️

Sonic went through a full redesign, bringing the character back to its cartoonish look rather than its uncanny human-like form.
Now, Shrek fans are hoping for the same outcome for their beloved ogre.
For people who still compare the new Shrek designs needing to go back like with the Sonic movie discourse. Look at this. Major difference is Sonic looks completely different, Shrek doesn’t. It’s ok to miss his old design, but let’s not act like it’s like Sonic. pic.twitter.com/6eCducvhMI

But only time will tell if they choose to make that call!
