During Carney’s recent visit to the United States, it seemed like Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney were the best of friends. However, now this alleged friendship appears to be nothing more than a performance.
In a recent clip that has been doing the rounds on multiple social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Mark Carney can be seen speaking to an interviewer about his hopes of establishing trade relationships with multiple countries, including Asia. The bold move from Carney comes against the backdrop of the tariffs that President Donald Trump has been imposing on multiple countries since he assumed office for a second term this year. Under these tariffs, Trump is increasing the rates for countries he has conflicts or those that are slightly ignoring his demands, which include China and, more recently, Canada.
While Carney didn’t name names, it was evident from his remarks about the countries he was considering for trade that he was alluding to China, in addition to the “Asian” nations he spoke of. Many people, especially those residing in the United States, took note of this aspect and highlighted on X social media posts featuring the video how Trump’s administration is doing more harm than good with their rash decisions, particularly regarding tariffs. For those who aren’t aware, Trump’s tariffs have already been causing widespread resentment among soybean farmers, cattle ranchers, and many others. One user remarked:
“Trump’s “America First” tariffs are turning into “America Last,” shoving our closest ally straight into China’s arms, brilliant strategy, Don, for making the US the world’s trade pariah.”
Another person made a similar observation and wrote:
“When “America First” becomes “America Alone,” allies don’t wait around; they pivot. Carney’s move isn’t betrayal; it’s survival in a world where U.S. trade policy is driven by impulse, not strategy. Trump didn’t just push Canada away; he handed China the welcome mat.”
Many others shared similar views, agreeing that Trump’s presence in America was detrimental to the country and its people.
