Shotts gaffer's frustration as cup call-off halts momentum

Shotts boss John McKeown says the right decision was made to call off their South Challenge Cup third round tie against Dundonald Bluebell, even if it does halt momentum.

A waterlogged Hannah Park pitch saw an early call-off following heavy overnight rain, allowing McKeown and his coaching team to watch future opponents and spy on players they might target.

McKeown’s side are involved in all domestic cups at this stage, so are already facing a backlog in the league, but he says he’s not too concerned about a pile-up.

He said: “It was the right decision. I was up there on Friday and the pitch was pretty heavy, with water lying on it.

“We managed to get it off, but overnight there was a wee bit more, and it has been battered with the weather.

“The ball wasn’t bouncing properly and you couldn’t get a sound footing, so it was right to call it off.

“It’s another added to the fixture list, but we’ve not really had any off, yet.

“It’s one of those where we’ve been a wee bit of a victim of our own success in the cups, but we haven’t fallen too far behind, and there’s plenty of time at the end of the season, but we were on a good bit of momentum and would like to have kept it going.

“But it’s one of those things, there’s nothing you can do about nature.

“Myself and the coaching staff will go to different games and start having an eye on who future opponents are, and looking at players and stuff as well.

“It’s a good wee opportunity.”

Shotts continue their West of Scotland League First Division campaign with a derby clash at Blantyre Vics on Saturday and it’s one McKeown is looking forward to.

He said: “Blantyre are always a good side, John Gibson has built a brilliant team there over the last few years.

“They’re young and energetic and play the right way, so it should be a good game.”
