Spiders start to become more visible at the start of autumn as the eight-legged creatures - which are usually male - search for a mate until around mid-October, reports the Record. It's the reason why you'll some hulking spiders indoors that aren't visible the rest the of year.
It's the scariest time of year for arachnophobes, but there are some ways you can repel the beasties from natural deterrents to decluttering, and this minty spray on Amazon.

One reviewer who has had a major spider fear since moving into her own home says the spray really does work but wishes that there wasn't a "massive spider" printed on the bottle.
She said: "I have a major spider fear since moving out and being a single mum I’m the ‘adult’ that gets rid of spiders. I can’t bring myself to even go near one without getting heart palpitations, funny enough the back door to my garden seems to have a spider problem, every time I open it to my horror one (or a few) seem to run in.
"I’ve been using this spray to spray the back door it seems to work if I spray it most days but if I don’t one seems to appear. Now the thing that bothers me is why would you plaster a picture of a massive spider on a spider repellent bottle when the person buying it obviously has a problem with spiders."
The repellent, which contains natural mint oil extract and leaves a fresh mint scent after use, is said to do the job but does need to be used every three to four days according to one shopper.
Philip Chadwick commented: "This is just a deterrent. You do need to spray every three to four days and be careful about draughts coming through the window when you spray, but apart from that, this does help."

Cleaning and tidying
Spiders are attracted to clutter as it gives them a safe place to hide. A spring clean at the end of summer is a handy way to discourage spiders - and usher in the new season while you're at it.
Banishing messes on the floor, clearing cramped cupboards, and generally keeping things spic and span will cut down on areas spiders could seek refuge.
Spider-repellent herbs
Basil is a popular herb used in the kitchen for a range of dishes, but insects don't like it. It is a good idea to consider keeping a basil plant in a pot to keep spiders away. Ants, mosquitoes and houseflies also dislike this plant.
Mint is another herb which repels spiders and other bugs. It is another plant which is popular for a range of recipes in the kitchen so is widely used in households up and down the UK. You can consider buying a mint plant which will also provide a fresh scent in the home and deter bugs at the same time.
The spice spiders hate
Cinnamon is a spice that is an aroma that spiders don't like, among other insects. Homeowners and tenants can consider choosing products such as cinnamon spice itself, or cinnamon essential oil to get a scent which is off-putting for these insects.
A cupboard staple

Onions are a popular staple for many recipes in the kitchen and are another natural item that spiders don't like. There is an added benefit to growing onions outside as they can be off-putting for the critters in the garden too.
Using a relaxing scent
Lavender is a scent which deters spiders so investing in a lavender plant inside the home or garden, or maybe a lavender scented candle, can help arm you against these pests. These lavender seeds at B&Q start from just £3.
Flowers
Chrysanthemums are a useful ally to help discourage spiders from the home or garden. This plant has flowers which spiders don't like. So it could be either an idea to grow these flowers at home or buy some of these flowers to display inside.
