Shoplifter sentenced after stealing 7 blocks of cheese from shop

A shoplifter took seven blocks of cheese from a Co-op shop and must now spend 10 weeks in jail.

The term was imposed because Liam Clarke stole within a fortnight of being handed a suspended prison term by city magistrates .

Sitting at the same court, District Judge Leo Pyle told him: "You had an obligation to keep out of trouble and since then you have committed further offences."

Clarke, 35, of Sneinton Hermitage admitted theft from the shop at the Bridgeway Centre in The Meadows as well as having the drug mamba on Thursday, March 5. He was ordered to pay £50 to the Co-op to cover the cost of the cheese.

Serena Cousin, mitigating, said: "He was street homeless for two years and since that time has got himself into all sorts of issues.

"However, he is now working with a lot of agencies and he has accommodation.

"Essentially he is asking for a chance. He is on universal credit but is struggling with his benefits and that has added to his difficulties."

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said Clarke was identified in the visitor who took the cheese.

He was later seen with two men on a street. The other pair ran off and Clarke had no cheese when searched.

Mr Carr added: "He was seen to conceal something in his trousers. That was a small amount of mamba in a black bag."

Clarke was given a 20-week prison sentence. He will be released halfway through and must then spend a year on probation.
