Shop manager tells of 'ordeal' after break in causes thousands worth of damage

A shop manager has called a break in which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage an 'ordeal'.

The MaxiSaver store on Stockwell Gate, Mansfield is believed to have been burgled between 7am and 7.30am on June 23.

A man reportedly broke into a shop by smashing a window before turning off the electric and cutting wires.

Windows, light fittings and switches were smashed during the break in, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Store manager Claire Bailey, 47, said: "I would say it was quite an ordeal for our staff just because it was so odd. It was a really weird. morning.

"It was reported and the police came after that, but nothing was taken, they never even got on the shop floor.

"They got in through the toilet door and then got back out again, then back through the roof. On the CCTV he had nothing on his feet."

The manager said that the intruder had landed in a storeroom above the shop floor.

She added: "They didn't take anything but they made a mess of the electric wiring and they'd also either broken through the ceiling or fallen through it.

"They'd also smashed a couple of windows, it was like there were trying to get out and obviously they'd set the alarm off which I think was why they were trying to cut the power.

"But we were back trading by lunchtime."

Police said had been alerted to the break in after a passer-by reported seeing metal tools being thrown out of the windows above the shop, narrowly missing them.

PC David Hawksworth, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This incident has left a business with thousands of pounds worth of damage, a lot of which is to the building and has taken a lot of time and money to repair, and we are determined to understand the circumstances around what happened.

“Officers continue to make enquiries and we would urge anyone with information, or anyone who recognises this man, to get in touch on 101, quoting incident 122 of 23 June 2021.”
