Tragedy struck near a migrant shelter on Randall's Island in New York City early Monday morning when a shooting incident resulted in one fatality and two individuals sustaining injuries. The New York Police Department responded to a distress call at Wards Meadow Loop Field 71 around 3:30 a.m., where they discovered three gunshot victims.
The victims, a 44-year-old woman with wounds to her face and back, a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his throat, and a 31-year-old woman shot in the back, were promptly transported to Harlem Hospital. Unfortunately, the 44-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries, while the other two victims were reported to be in stable condition as of Monday morning.
As of now, the identities of the victims remain undisclosed, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities indicating that they are searching for at least two male suspects. Reports suggest that one suspect fled on a moped, while the other made a getaway in a vehicle bearing New Mexico license plates.
This incident follows a recent stabbing at the same migrant shelter last month, which led to the arrest of two individuals. The escalating violence near city-run migrant shelters has sparked outrage among residents, with a recent protest organized in Brooklyn against the surge in criminal activities, littering, and frequent altercations at a migrant complex housing approximately 4,000 individuals.
Law enforcement is currently probing potential links between the violence near the Brooklyn shelter and a violent Venezuelan street gang, following a tragic incident on Sunday that resulted in two fatalities and one individual sustaining critical injuries in the vicinity of the mega shelter complex.
