Shocking pictures show grass fire ripping through open land near Ammanford

Dramatic photos show firefighters battling a grass fire that ripped through a hillside near Ammanford.

It's thought the grass fire in the village of Garnswllt between Ammanford and Pontarddulais started at around 2pm on Saturday afternoon before spreading across more than two acres of open land.

Stuart Ladd, who lives off Garnswllt Road, said that at its peak flames reached around 20ft high and the blaze was just yards away from reaching the cattery next to his home.

The devastating impact of a catastrophic mountain wildfire... a year on

Mr Ladd, who captured the fire on camera, said: “We live in the adjacent property to the cattery, which is around 100 yards from where the fire was.

“It’s been so dry today that I’m not surprised it caught fire, it could have been anything that caused it.

“We called the fire service at around 2pm and there have been two fire engines there ever since. It’s mostly contained now, but it’s been going for a good few hours.

“The fire service had to let it burn out before they could start putting it out, so it spread all the way down to the road. At its peak the flames were probably around 20ft.

“It was quite spectacular to see.

Dramatic scenes as 'apocalyptic' mile-long grass fires rip through Maerdy and Rhigos mountains

“We had a grass fire here when we had the last sunny spell, so probably in the last fortnight. It was in the same area, but the one today is much bigger.

“You never think it’s going to happen so close to your house, but it has been very warm and dry.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire Service said two fire engines were on scene, with firefighters using a hose reel and batons to extinguish the flames.

The fire ripped through 2.4 acres of grass and bushes.

On Saturday, firefighters also battled a grass fire in the Gower, which spread across land in the Cefn Bryn area.

The fire service was called at 10.07am and stood down at 3.47pm.
