Shock Glasgow Central Station crime figures reveal over 180 incidents reported in 2021

Over 180 crimes were reported in or near to Glasgow Central Station in 2021 according to shock new figures.

A study by British Transport Police (BTP) has confirmed that 181 crimes were reported to officers at the station in the year to November of 2021.

These included 66 reported incidents involving violence or sexual offences, 24 of drug possession, 17 of weapons possession, 15 of shoplifting, 14 instances of criminal damage or arson, eight of bicycle theft and two of robbery.

The number of reported crimes at Glasgow Central in 2021 were over triple the amount reported at Glasgow Queen Street, where a total of 55 crimes were reported to BTP officers - including 15 involving violence or sexual offences and 14 of drug possession.

Elsewhere in the Glasgow and wider area, the third highest amount of crimes reported were to be found at Paisley Gilmour Street, with 29 in total, followed by 16 crimes at Motherwell station, 15 at Airdrie and 12 at Partick and Drumchapel respectively.

Westerton, Singer, Hyndland, Hamilton Central and Caldercruix also featured in the list of stations in the wider Greater Glasgow area that reported 10 crimes or more last year.

Across Britain, Birmingham New Street was the station with the most crimes reported, at 523, followed by London Victoria (495), and London Bridge (445).

BTP, who are responsible for policing Britain’s railways, say they dealt with a total 38,299 reported crimes in the year to November 2021, a fall from 43,312 the year before and 62,155 in the year to November 2019.
