Shock as face of mysterious ghost called 'Herbert' seen on wall of old carpet shop

Residents in Stapleford have been left in shock after seeing the face of a mysterious figure on the wall of an old carpet shop.

Back in December 2016, deputy mayor and Stapleford North councillor Richard MacRae went to look around Deacon House in Derby Road with community photographer Chris Davis.

Their idea was to get some pictures of the old building before the first floor was converted into flats.

However, it was only on Sunday, January 19 that they discovered the face of a mysterious man on the damp wall above the window.

Mr MacRae said the building is allegedly haunted by a strange fellow called 'Herbert', and as the story goes, if you can smell lavender the man himself has been down into the shop.

"It looks like he's got one of those shirts with the upturned collar and lots of people are saying it looks Victorian," he told Nottinghamshire Live.

"[We saw it] in the flats above the charity shop Sense on Derby Road. Prior to that it was a carpet shop.

"The owner was telling us that people were saying they would never go upstairs. At the time, we come down stairs and all of a sudden I heard what sounded like someone running across the naked floorboards.

"I went running out of the building because I was so scared and everyone was laughing. Supposedly there is a ghost called Herbert and this has been going on for years.

"It was the maddest thing ever. An apprentice at the old carpet shop would not go upstairs because of the stories.

"It's one of those things that you would not believe it if you were not there. I was there and I know what I heard."

Mr MacRae said they had been looking around the building to document what it looked like before it was turned into flats.

The ground floor is now home to the Sense charity shop.

But now they are wondering just what the story might be behind the building.

Do you know who Herbert might be?
