Shkodran Mustafi refuses to rule out Arsenal stay after resurgence in form

Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi thinks he could still play an important part in the club's future despite it appearing all-but-certain at one stage that he would move on.

The 27-year-old struggled under previous manager Unai Emery, becoming something of a scapegoat for Gunners fans after making a number of mistakes, and it looked inevitable he would leave in January.

But under new manager Mikel Arteta his performances have improved, and speaking after their 1-0 victory over Olympiacos in the Europa League Mustafi said he is open to the idea of staying for the foreseeable future.

When asked about whether he could remain at the club, Mustafi said: "Why not? I have always taken things day to day.

"We had a game on Thursday, we have the next important game at the weekend and as long as I am playing for a club - it doesn't matter which one - I play now for Arsenal and played before for previous ones.

"I always gave everything until the last minute and when I decide or when the club and I decide it is going to continue I am happy to continue, if not then we have to go forward."

Mustafi has won praise from fans for how he has bounced back from his poor run of form, and he said he appreciates their support after his difficult period.

"It is always important to have a good relationship with the fans but for me the main thing was to be professional," Mustafi added.

"To always be there for my team-mates and for the club and then obviously when you play well they appreciate your performances but it makes it easier when you have the fans behind you, back supporting you so I am happy for that."

Mustafi could feature again this weekend when Arsenal take on Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
