Shearer explains how 'special' Saint-Maximin can sometimes 'drive you mad' after Wilson scream

Allan Saint-Maximin can sometimes 'drive you mad' by not doing the 'simple things' but Alan Shearer has hailed the Newcastle United talisman following his game-changing cameo in the Magpies' 2-1 win against Burnley.

Steve Bruce had felt the 'urgency' to start Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson after they trained well all week, but the Newcastle head coach ultimately opted to 'box clever' following the influential pair's recent spells out with muscle injuries.

With his side 1-0 down - Matej Vydra had given Burnley a deserved lead - Bruce made a double change in the 57th minute as Saint-Maximin and Wilson replaced Joelinton and Dwight Gayle.

Saint-Maximin teed up Jacob Murphy's stunning equaliser just two minutes later before going it alone, himself, and scoring a wonderful individual goal in the 64th minute.

Shearer thought Newcastle were a 'different team' when Saint-Maximin and Wilson entered the fray and the Magpies' legend noticed how 'everyone's performance went up 20% or 25%'.

"This is what he does," Shearer told Premier League Productions. "He's unpredictable. Sometimes he will drive you mad in terms of not doing the simple things, but what he does is he attracts players to him.

"Then that frees up other players in and around him and that's when that worked when he pulled it back to Murphy, and it was a brilliant strike.

"We see the same thing again. He could and possibly should pass that into Wilson there. You can see Wilson screaming but he doesn't and once he doesn't, he's got to do something special because of that and, boy, did he do that and that's got Newcastle the three points."
