A remarkable Shawhead woman has become Stewartry’s latest centenarian.
And there was a very special 100th birthday party for Jenny Laurie on Friday afternoon.
Irongray Senior Citizens Club and Shawhead SWI, of which Jenny is a long-standing member, organised the celebration.
And the highlight was a ‘This Is Your Life’ tribute to Jenny from club chairman and close friend John Bryden.
His speech featured many of Jenny’s exploits over the years including winning countless prizes for her baking which she still loves doing.
Mr Bryden said: “I have known Jenny all my days. She is a remarkable woman.
“I take her out shopping every Friday morning and she’s straight off with the trolley. I can’t keep up with her.
“She looks like she can go on for a while yet. She’s amazing.”
Jenny was born Janet Drummond at Bardarroch, Kirkpatrick Durham, on March 6, 1920.
At the age of three she moved to Shawhead then on to Longbeoch Farm outside the village.
In 1946 she married William Laurie of nearby Romesbeoch Farm.
William died in 1980 but Jenny continues to lead a full and active life.
“Jenny has always been active and is never idle,” Mr Bryden said.
“She is always into everything and takes part in everything. She is very competitive.
“They compete for a cup at the Shawhead Rural which started back in 1950. Her name appears 40 times on the trophy.”
Jenny still stays in Shawhead with her sister-in-law – who herself is 97.
Around 50 friends attended Friday’s celebration at Shawhead Village Hall.
Local resident Dame Barbara Kelly proposed a toast to Jenny and congratulated her on reaching her century.
