Shark spotted prowling off British coast before getting up close to divers

A shark has been spotted prowling off the coast of southern England.

A long blue shark was spotted getting up close to divers during a trip on Plymouth Sound, off the Devon coastline.

Images showed the blue shark gliding through the water before coming almost face-to-face with those on the dive.

The species rarely targets humans, but has been responsible for four recorded fatalities.

It was part of a dive that also saw encounters with bottlenose dolphins, sunfish and giant tuna.

The video was filmed by Chris Macklin, a surgeon from Yorkshire, was with his son in the waters just off Plymouth, Devon.

Deborah Metcalfe, co-owner of Sound Diving, which organised the trip, said the divers were very lucky.

"Not only were they treated to a beautiful display from the sharks, they were also lucky enough to see bottlenose dolphins, sunfish and giant tuna on the trip", she said.

The family-friendly dive centre takes groups out in the Sound on a fortnightly basis, and say August and September were traditionally the best times to spot a blue shark.

Deborah added: "The first time divers see it they actually appreciate that the British waters are thriving at the moment. Their response is phenomenal, it really is."
