Shane Williams baffled by Ospreys' treatment of Sam Davies as he backs him for Wales return

Shane Williams has tipped Dragons new boy Sam Davies to challenge for a Wales squad place following his move to Rodney Parade.

Fly-half Davies swapped the Ospreys for a new challenge with Dean Ryan's side this week and Wales' all-time top try-scorer believes the move will be good for the 25-year-old.

In his weekly column for the Rugby Paper, Williams pondered why Davies had not featured more for the Ospreys in a difficult final season - adding that the eight-cap Wales international will add a quality to the Rodney Parade outfit not seen in Gwent for many seasons.

"This season Sam didn't play that much rugby and that baffled me," said Williams.

"Did he fall out with head coach Allen Clarke? Did he not fit into the game plan? Whatever happened, Sam needs to start again and the Dragons - which is a blank canvas - is a good chance to do exactly that.

"With all due respect to the fly-halves the Dragons have had in recent years, he's on a different level to them.

"Sam plays very flat to the gain line and is good at freeing his hands in the tackle to unleash runners. That will benefit guys like Tyler Morgan and Jordan Williams who will work well outside him."

And Williams believes that the move could help him add to his tally of Welsh caps - with his last outing in a red jersey coming against Samoa in Apia in the summer of 2017.

Since then, the former junior world player of the year has fallen down the international pecking order - something Williams thinks could change with a strong start in a new environment.

"It must not be forgotten his work on the Test stage so far," he added.

"He produced the goods on the 2017 tour of Samoa and Tonga, slotted a match-winning drop-goal to save a poor Wales performance from defeat against Japan. and has also featured in the Six Nations.

"That's where I want to see Sam back to in the future. Of course he has a lot of competition for a Wales fly-half spot from Gareth, Dan, Rhys Patchell and Jarrod Evans, but he has the talent to be competing with those guys.

"Whatever happens after the World Cup and going into the the new era of Welsh rugby under Wayne Pivac, Sam will be in the mix."
