Shamrock Rovers' Aidomo Emakhu scores on debut as Ireland U19s draw with Sweden in Spain

Aidomo Emakhu marked his Republic of Ireland under-19 with a goal as Tom Mohan’s side fought back to hold their Swedish counterparts to a second draw in four days.

The Shamrock Rovers striker netted clinically late in the first half as Ireland ended their preparation for next month’s Euro qualifying campaign in Bulgaria with back-to-back draws.

A serious-looking injury to St Patrick’s Athletic playmaker Ben McCormack marred the second half for Ireland and his club side, where he is a regular in the senior side.

Mohan named an entirely fresh line-up from the one that had tied 2-2 with Sweden in Marbella last week with Emakhu coming in after missing Friday on club duty.

The changes meant all but one of the 23-man squad assembled by Mohan got to start a game over the week.

The new combinations were still bedding in when the Swedes hit the front midway through the first half courtesy of Hammarby striker Jusef Erabi.

Arlo Doherty had initially done well to save the initial effort on goal, but Ireland were unable to clear and Erabi was able to force the loose ball home.

Ireland trailed for just six minutes as Emakhu, who has made a habit of debut goals after netting the winner on his European debut against Teuta, levelled it up.

The Clondalkin man finished emphatically after capitalising on some confusion in the Swedish defence to rifle home.

Ireland thought they’d taken the lead moments later as a flowing move down the right ended with McCormack finding the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

Substitute Cristiano Fitzgerald, of Boavista, was denied a winner late on as Ireland had the better of a second half that also saw McCormack carried off with a concerning injury.

Republic of Ireland: Arlo Doherty, Oisin Gallagher (Josh Seary 57), Jevon Mills, JAmes Abankwah (Anselmo Garcia MacNulty 84), Val Adedokun (Tayo Adaramola 84), Kian Corbally, Ed McJannett (Bosun Lawal 84), Harry Vaughan (Jamie Mullins 84); Ben McCormack (John Joe Patrick Finn Benoa 71), Cian Hayes (Cristiano Fitzgerald 84), Aidomo Emakhu (Luke Pearce 63).

Sweden: Guadagno, Robak, Nilsson, Ayari, Dahl, Widell, Olsson, Erabi, Swedberg, Navik, Qasem.
