Shakur Stevenson vs Teofimo Lopez live: Fight updates and results as victorious challenger faces off with Conor Benn

Shakur Stevenson produced a long-awaited masterclass at the elite level on Saturday, dethroning Teofimo Lopez with a near-flawless performance in New York City.

Inside the iconic Madison Square Garden, it was New Jersey’s Stevenson versus Brooklyn’s Lopez, with the latter defending the WBO super-lightweight title. And the controversial Lopez, 28, was shown up by the smaller man in Stevenson, also 28, who won 11 out of 12 rounds on all three judges’ scorecards.

In doing so, Stevenson became a four-weight world champion in record time, adding to his past successes at lower weights. He also stayed unbeaten while handing Lopez his second professional loss. But for all of Stevenson’s achievements, he has blown hot and cold on fight nights, so Saturday’s victory may go down as a long-awaited, career-defining triumph for him.

And during his post-fight interview in the ring, Stevenson was confronted by British welterweight Conor Benn, in a potential clue to his next move...

“I shouldn’t even be standing here. I went through a lot of tough battles throughout my career, but every dog has his day – congratulations to Shakur.

“Great guy, great fighter. We put everything on the line, that’s what true champions are about.”

Benn enters the ring for a shouting match...

“You’re too small for me, bro, you’re tiny,” says the Briton.

“My skills is too much!” counters Stevenson.

“You can’t punch, you can’t keep me off you,” says Benn. “You think I’m scared of you? I’m not scared of you, bro. We can do it next.”

Stevenson, who shares Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn, tells the Matchroom boss: “He’s food! He’s food! He’s food!”

Benn: “Come up to welterweight with the big dogs. You’re a little man.”

But Benn signs off by admitting it’s “your night” and backing off.

“I said thank you for the opportunity [after the final bell].

“Like I said, I had to follow in [Terence] ‘Bud’ Crawford’s footsteps. He went in there and dominated against Canelo [Alvarez, in September].

“He inspired me. I knew I had to do it.”

“Hey listen, I said I boxed guys like this my entire career,” he says. “This is the art of boxing: hit and don’t get hit.

“I told y’all I’m the best fighter on the planet, and I stand by that.

“I watched [tape on] him and I knew my jab was gonna kill him. I told everyone: they’re gonna see I’ve got the best jab in boxing after this fight.

“I felt like I was the stronger fighter, I was faster, I was sharper, I was smarter.”

Shakur comes forward. Lopez’s cut around the left eye is pretty bad now.

Stevenson catches Lopez with a jab on the exit. Lopez comes back with a flurry to the body, but he eats a left hook up top.

Lopez walks onto a few straight shots! He laughs them off, but this is a bad night for him.

Still, Shakur comes first and drills a straight shot into the mid-section of Lopez.

Shakur with a counter left hook to the body. Lopez makes him miss then looks around, as if to ask, “Where did those punches go?”

Lopez’s father calls for power, but he needs accuracy first!

Teo digs a right hook to the body. He tries to get the left hook going upstairs, but he can’t find the target.

A left hook lands to the body, though! This is better by Lopez. More positive work ensues.

Okay, into the second half of this right. 78-23 is the punches landed comparison so far, in favour of Shakur of course.

It doesn’t even look like Shakur is having to go through the gears to be comfortably ahead tonight.

Lopez is walking onto piston jabs.

He hits the canvas, but it’s no knockdown; it’s just the result of some grappling.

That left eye of Lopez, which was marked up before, is now cut.

Wild overhand right miss from Lopez. He’s made to miss some more, stumbling past Stevenson.

Stunning hand speed by Lopez to land to the body, to his credit. Stevenson responds in kind.

Halfway through, and we have it 60-44 to Shakur – i.e. he’s won every round.

Round five

A counter cross almost buckles the legs of Lopez, it seems...

Stern cross to the mid-section of Lopez, who is huffing and puffing. Lopez comes back with a similar shot of his own, to the chest.

More positive work from Lopez as the round wears on. He’s not landing clean but he’s coming forward and throwing combinations.

Another Shakur round, though. A clean sweep so far, perhaps.

Stevenson edges forward, and Lopez skips away. The champ then lands a cross to the body but misses with an uppercut and hook.

Lopez’s left eye is sporting some damage. Shakur with a slick counter shot, and Lopez stumbles! He nearly touches the canvas!

The crowd is worked up!

Decent right hook by Shakur off the break of a clinch.

Lopez likes to have fun in the ring, but it’s Shakur who’s all smiles. Lopez is still visibly concerned. 40-36 to Shakur.

Shakur tells his coach – his grandfather – “I’m stronger than him!” The reply? “I know, you’re better than him.”

Another firm southpaw cross from Shakur, who adds a jab.

Lopez tries a few feints, but he’s not getting much out of Stevenson. Lopez already looks a bit frustrated, a bit red around the face from his challenger’s offence as well.

Both men go to the body. Stevenson then goes upstairs and visibly coos at his work. He makes Lopez miss, before landing to the head and body in the clinch.

The ref thinks about stepping in, and Shakur appears to say, “Are you crazy??”

Lopez is the bigger man, but he’s been handled well by Shakur in the early clinches.

Shakur backs up Lopez, who keeps his hands low still. Another blitz attempt from Lopez, it’s a bit messy, and Shakur slips to the mat – no knockdown.

A louddddd crowd greets the first bell.

The orthodox Lopez comes forward early and misses with a wild right hook, and he’s immediately countered by a blistering southpaw straight.

Lopez is in his trademark stance with his hands low. He again misses with a wide shot, and Stevenson grapples. A well-timed jab by Stevenson in the first exchange after they separate.

Lopez with a blitz, catching Shakur with a short left hand. Some lovely counter jabs by Shakur, then a stinging cross!

Ortiz’s eyes are checked by a ringside doctor before this final round.

The ref warns the boxers to keep it clean, and Davis is leaning forward, mocking Ortiz.

Once the action resumes, Davis corners Ortiz. The pair clinch, with Ortiz getting off some decent body shots.

They separate, and in the ensuing exchanges, with just seconds left, Davis drops Ortiz again! It’s a one-two up top then a grazing body shot.

Once again it’s Ortiz on a knee, and the ref waves it off this time!

It’s all over in round nine!! Shu Shu, fighting in front of his hometown, turns NYC into Shu York after all!

After dialling up the pressure in round eight, he leans back then forward to land a picture-perfect right cross that freezes Castro, before adding a flurry to floor Castro badly!

It’s a left hook to the body, then a trio of straights to the head – right, left, right.

Castro rises late during the ref’s count, and he can’t quite beat it!

Shu Shu is fired up at first, then he’s in tears.

Ibeh backs up Miller and lands some firm shots, but credit to Miller, who withstands the power and fires back.

More clinching between the heavyweights, emphasis on HEAVY – even among the big boys, these lads are particularly sizeable.

Rear uppercut and right hook by Ibeh, and he follows up, with Miller looking a bit wobbly! Still Big Baby throws back!

Oh wow... This is mad... Miller’s hair is... coming off? I guess it turns out he has a toupee! It flops all the way back! Between rounds, Miller throws it into the crowd! What?!

We expected a bit of a brawl in that contest, and based on Williams’s front-foot-but-flawed performance tonight, that’s what we would’ve gotten.
