The School Library Association (SLA) information book prize honours the best non-fiction books for children. One set of winners is chosen by judges including librarians, and a children’s choice award is chosen by young readers in schools, libraries, book groups and reading groups.
The winners are:
OVERALL WINNER and 7-12 winner: Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill (Flying Eye)
William Grill retells the story of Ernest Shackleton’s treacherous voyage across the Antarctic Ocean from one pole to the other. This nail-biting true story is accompanied by stunning illustrations that beautifully visualise the terrifying journey and the bravery of the people involved.
0-7 winner: Tiny - the Invisible World of Microbes by Nicola Davies and Emily Sutton (Walker)
Find out about tiny living things called microbes and what they do, from making you ill to keeping you alive. With beautiful illustrations, this book opens the door to the world of microbiology in an easy and understandable way.
12-16 winner: The Teenage Guide to Stress by Nicola Morgan (Walker)
A brilliant handbook for teenagers (and their parents) to guide readers through the difficult time of adolescence. This fantastic book deals with the biology of the adolescent brain, the pressures from school and peers, relationships with friends and family, romance, and more serious issues such as eating disorders and cyber-bullying. Nicola Morgan offers plenty of suggestions of how to cope with teenage stress, making this a must-read.

War can cause feelings of alienation and isolation for immigrant children and their families, and this picture book deals with these emotions in a sensitive way. The story of 10-year-old refugee Ali and his grandmother, who flee their home country to escape war, looks at the difficulties that people face when escaping war and seeking refuge, and at the hope that can carry them through.
