Severe weather warning issued for swathe of England as temperatures plummet

Brits have been urged to brace for freezing cold conditions on Tuesday with a warning for ice issued for a huge swathe of England.

The Met Office issued the yellow weather warning for ice on Tuesday covering a large portion of northern England.

Forecasters said those in the affected regions should expect 'icy stretches' on Tuesday morning.

From 2am until 11am people should be aware of the possibility of 'some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.'

There is also likely to be 'some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.'

The forecaster said in its warning: "Following overnight rainfall surface temperatures are now dropping with icy stretches expected to form."

Other yellow weather warnings have already been issued by the Met Office for parts of northern Scotland.

Two warnings, for snow and ice, and also wind, are currently in place.

A yellow warning has been issued in north Scotland - including Inverness - that icy surfaces could cause treacherous walking conditions and there could be some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

The snow and icy conditions will continue in parts of Scotland on Tuesday but with the addition of severe winds, there could be disruption including delays to road, air and ferry transport.

High-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges could also face delays while there could be loss of power to some homes and businesses.

Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities have been warned they could be affected by spray and/or large waves.

The Met Office says snow showers and icy stretches could lead to difficult driving and walking conditions with delays on roads and disruption to all forms of public transport.
