Service resumes on CTA Red Line after derailment

Nov. 01--CTA Red Line service has resumed after trains were disrupted Saturday afternoon due to a derailment on the North Side.

The minor derailment happened about 2:07 p.m., just north of the Granville Station, said Steve Mayberry, a CTA spokesman.

As of 3:30 p.m., all passengers on the derailed train had been removed, Mayberry said.

On social media, Loyola University student Sara Ann Mayes said her train was going from Sheridan to Loyola when it stopped for signal and all the lights went off.

Mayes said she was on the train for about an hour and 10 minutes. People on her train were "super anxious" but she said she didn't see any injuries.

"Train car passengers started handing out candy bars and peanuts to others, so we don't resort to eating each other," Mayes tweeted.

Another person who said they were stuck on the train said folks were not happy and asked, "Where's the bathroom??"

According to the CTA website, shuttle buses would be available to provide service between the Belmont and Howard Street stations.

Officials said customers could use the No. 36, No. 147, and No. 151 buses as alternatives to the Red Line.

No injuries were reported, Mayberry said.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., officials reported trains were moving normally.
