Serial offender caught standing outside Lanarkshire homeless unit with scissors

A serial offender is back behind bars after he was caught standing with a pair of scissors outside a homeless unit.

Thomas Mina had earlier threatened to harm himself, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard on Friday.

Mina, 30, a prisoner, admitted possession of a bladed item in Barrack Street, Hamilton, on November 28.

Last year he was jailed for 14 months after walking into East Kilbride police station with a knife and demanding to be sent to prison.

On that occasion Mina’s lawyer said he suffered bullying and harassment in the community and preferred to be locked up.

In 2019 he was jailed for a year after he walked into homeless accommodation in Portwell, Hamilton, carrying a knife.

He was released early on each occasion, only to offend again.

Describing the latest incident, prosecutor Jennifer McCabe said staff at the Barrack Street complex found Mina in the kitchen in the early hours of the morning.

He was holding a pair of scissors and threatening to harm himself.

The workers were alarmed and contacted the police.

When officers arrived Mina was standing outside, still holding the scissors. He complied with a police request to put them down.

Defence agent Stephen McQuillan referred to his client’s mental health difficulties and produced a medical report.

He urged Sheriff Ray Small to “look at other options” before deciding on a sentence.

The sheriff said, given Mina’s record, he would have been entitled to impose another jail stretch immediately, but agreed to defer sentence for a criminal justice social work report.

Mina was remanded in custody until April 13.
