Sergio Aguero has unfinished business at Liverpool and Rafa Benitez knows it

Liverpool will arguably be pleased to see the back of Sergio Aguero this summer.

After 10 years at Man City, it was confirmed earlier this week that the Argentina international will leave the club at the end of his contract.

The 32-year-old has endured an injury-plagued year at the Etihad, limited to just 14 appearances so far this campaign, but looks set to leave the club with at least another Premier League winner's medal with Pep Guardiola's side riding high at the top of the table.

Despite City not often enjoying the best fortune against Liverpool, Aguero has proven to be a prolific foe against the Reds during his decade in the Premier League with the Argentine scoring seven goals from 15 top-flight appearances against the reigning champions.

And while none of those goals have come at Anfield, he has established himself as one of the Premier League's greatest ever strikers.

But you'd like to think Aguero would have enjoyed better fortunes on Merseyside had his career gone down a different path, with Rafa Benitez previously admitting he once snubbed the opportunity to sign the striker for Liverpool.

Prior to his move to Atletico Madrid from Independiente in 2006, Liverpool were in talks to sign the then-18-year-old.

However, Benitez decided against proceeding with the move.

"Two years ago the agents were talking with us about players and he was one of those," the Spaniard admitted in 2008. "But he was too young and (Atletico) paid big money for him, around 18 million euros for a player who was a risk.

"In the Premier League it's different and sometimes players will need more time here to improve."

He elaborated further on his decision not to sign Aguero in 2016 when in charge of Newcastle United.

"I have a good relationship with Sergio because he’s close to (Javier) Mascherano and I was watching the Argentina team," Benitez recalled. "Hopefully he can score a lot of goals in the Champions League but not against us (Newcastle).

"I was Liverpool manager, they offered him to us as a young player for big, big money. He signed for Atletico Madrid. He was a player that we knew. We were following him. We knew he was a very good player then."

Meanwhile, Aguero admitted he was a Liverpool fan when still on the books of Independiente after watching the Reds' 2005 Champions League final victory over AC Milan.

"If I had to choose a league then it would be the Premier League," Aguero was quoted as saying in the Munich TZ newspaper when asked about his future at the time.

"I have been a Liverpool fan for as long as I can remember and it would be a dream to play there. I watched the Champions League final and celebrated every goal as if it was for Independiente."

Aguero will leave Man City without ever scoring at Anfield and with his teenage dream of playing for Liverpool left unfulfilled.

It is highly unlikely that Jurgen Klopp would look to sign the would be-33-year-old on a free transfer this summer despite his impending availability.

But having seen him score 257 from 384 appearances for Man City, winning four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and five League Cups to date, Liverpool fans could have been forgiven for wondering what could have been had Benitez taken a gamble on the teenage forward from Buenos Aires back in 2006.
