‘Selfless’ former mayoress Gay Wharton to be remembered at memorial service this weekend

A memorial service will be held this weekend for Gay Wharton, the much-loved former Mayoress of Bolton, who died after being struck by a car last November.

Charity volunteer Mrs Wharton was mayoress of the borough of Bolton alongside 2014 mayor Coun Martin Donaghy and a second mayoress Jacqueline Tracey.

The three of them had worked together at Sainsbury’s in Bolton town centre where Mrs Wharton was an in-store trainer.

Mrs Wharton was a dedicated patron of Fortalice, a Bolton-based charity providing services for people who are, or have been, affected by domestic abuse and violence.

The memorial service will take place at Bolton Parish Church on Saturday, November 13 at 11am and all are welcome.

The service has been delayed as at the time of Mrs Wharton’s death much tighter restrictions were in place on public gatherings.

Mrs Wharton was a pedestrian when she was struck by a car on Chorley New Road, Bolton, on November 13 of last year.

Speaking this week, Coun Danaghy, said: “This service is a celebration of Gay’s life in prayer, music and poetry.

“At the time of her funeral is was very limited as to who could go because of the restrictions.

“Many people haven’t had the chance to say a proper farewell to her.

“Gay was a person who would give of her time to help other people and both in her work as a Mayoress and also at Fortalice.

“She was selfless and nothing was too much trouble. She put others first.”

In June, two men were jailed after being convicted of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the incident in which Mrs Wharton was killed.
